Building Lots : Finding the Right Building Lot for Your New House

We chose our land based on a few important facts, for us and for resale down the road. (Can't imagine ever not wanting to plan and build, again! It's my favourite thing, so keeping resale in mind when we build is critical.)

For one, it's an Acreage with Town Water -- very hard to come by! This property is in an Estate Area, where there are 55 building lots in total, varying in size from 1 Acre lots to 3.5 Acre lots. Ours is a 1.23 Acre Lot, with a long horizontal , rectangular shape, so I designed our new home to 'match' the land.

The measurements of the lot are 495 feet long by about 113 feet wide, so there was plenty of room to play with. We were lucky enough to find a lot with a lovely Mountain view, so we definitely wanted to maximize that feature. If you click onto the House Plans, you'll see the Large Windows at the Back of the house. The whole Dining Area and Living room have fabulous view to the land and the mountains.

I added a Garden Room off the Master Bedroom, because one day when Dwight and I were out at the land, I happened to turn away from gazing at the mountains ( which we looove! ), and I noticed what a beautiful view we had to the South and East. We had been sooo focussed on the mountains, that we hadn't put very many windows on those sides, so after much convincing (wink, wink! Check out the Frederick's Banner on the Ask Ailsa section if you need help convincing your spouse that you need a waaaay bigger house! ha,ha,ha!), Dwight let me add in The Garden Room. Now he thinks it was his idea!

Another great feature of this land is it's proximity to two towns, Okotoks and High River (each about an 8 minute drive away), and we are only 15 minutes to Calgary. (We're in Calgary, Alberta, Canada) Also, there is a new FreeWay going in about five minutes from us, linking directly into Calgary. An easily accessible Acreage Property will go up in value, since more commuters will find it more practical to 'live in the country'.

Here's the Land before the Build -- see the Stakes in the first picture? We love the Mountain View!

And here's the Land in the Winter and Fall -- that's Dwight, Aidan & Tia out for a stroll on our Land!
